Man Charged for Harbouring Illegal Immigrants
A former Croatian Foreign Ministry employee has been arrested in Zagreb on allegation of aiding illegal immigration.
The man hid four undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh and five from Pakistan in his house. Police launched an investigation after reports from neighbours saying that they had seen some strangers in the neighbourhood.
According to police spokesperson Marija Goatti, the suspect rented the dwelling to a citizen of India who had an accomplice.
The suspect provided mattresses and food to the people who were staying in his house, Marija Goatti said. Interested in personal gain, the three men conspired to help undocumented immigrants to enter and illegally settle in Croatia.
Zagreb police are searching for one Indian national who escaped during the investigation. The rest were detained.
